Amor, mujeres y flores
Jorge Silva and Marta Rodríguez / 2025 / Colombia / 77 min.
Synopsis:
How much does it cost to produce beauty? This documentary denounces how pesticides that are banned in countries like the United States, Germany, and France are imported to developing countries and Latin America, producing what is called “the atomic bomb of the poor.”
In the Sabana de Bogotá, entrepreneurs from the United States, France, and Japan, in the 1970s, launched the floriculture industry. Taking advantage of cheap labor and favorable weather conditions, production costs are kept very low. Since flower cultivation is typically women’s work, it employs some 70,000 women. Because flowers are produced for export, this requires the use of pesticides, since their condition must be optimal. However, this results in serious health problems for the women and cases of death due to the hazardous chemicals used.
