Description
As part of the Banco de la República National Concert Season, MAMM welcomes Tolú Jazz Quintet, an ensemble founded in 2012 under the direction of maestro Rigoberto Pérez Villalba. Their artistic proposal builds a bridge between tradition and modernity, blending emblematic rhythms from the Sucre region—such as porro and cumbia—with influences from jazz, swing, and funk to create a fresh, distinctive, and universal sound.
In 2014, the group released Tolú Jazz, an album featuring both reinterpretations of traditional regional pieces and original compositions that further explore this hybrid musical language. Since then, they have performed at some of Colombia’s most important jazz festivals, including Barranquijazz, Villa Jazz, and Tolijazz, establishing themselves as a significant presence on the country’s contemporary music scene.
Composed primarily of educators and accomplished performing musicians, the quintet is recognized for its musical excellence, creativity, and commitment to sharing the rich musical heritage of Colombia’s Caribbean region, bringing the traditions of Sucre to new audiences and expanding their sonic horizons.
