Description
To understand the expression “contemporary art,” this course will establish a frame of reference, as it is a complex term that could be used to describe the characteristics of art from any period in history. With this introductory course, we aim to focus on contemporary art in our country, our historical moment, and our socio-cultural context.
To this end, it is necessary to identify the characteristics of a certain way of conceiving and developing artistic practices in Colombia between the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Several authors agree that a paradigm shift regarding the category of art in Colombia can be traced between 1968 and 1978.
The sessions will generally cover segments spanning approximately 20 years of artistic practice, focusing on some of the most relevant artists of each period and highlighting key events that marked turning points. The course will be taught in person through lectures. Each session will include presentations by expert guest lecturers, followed by a question-and-answer period for participants.
The course “Destiempos. Tres miradas sobre el arte contemporáneo en Colombia” (Out of Time: Three Perspectives on Contemporary Art in Colombia) begins on Saturday, May 13th and will feature instructors Jaime Cerón, a renowned independent curator and art critic, visual artist, and Master in History and Theory of Art; Elena Acosta, a teacher and researcher, specialist and Master in Aesthetics, and PhD candidate in Philosophy; and Ana María Lozano Rocha, a researcher, curator of contemporary Colombian art, and teacher.
