Description
After a long truck journey, Erik returns home to his wife, Mira, and his mother, Aigul, hoping that a stroke of luck on the slot machines will be a good omen for his small family of Kyrgyz immigrants in Chicago. While Erik remains hopeful, Mira is skeptical, and Aigul optimistic. But Erik gambles again with shady characters who have cheated him before. Hoping for a stroke of luck, Erik loses everything and sinks deeper into debt. His loss drives him to violence, and he disappears into the night. The next day, Mira wakes to the consequences of Erik’s actions. Pressed by Aigul and aware of the gravity of her situation, Mira uncovers Erik’s unpaid debts and the threat of deportation, all while concealing her own secrets. As Aigul continues to deny reality, Mira, isolated, realizes she must find her own path to freedom and a better future.
