Ivan Argote. To Feel Your Weight

To Feel Your Weight is an invitation to take a break and engage in collective play and dialogue with other museum visitors. In his practice, Colombian artist Iván Argote (Bogotá, 1983) examines the dynamics of public space, looking to spark conversations. In this installation, he subtly modifies a simple action—sitting on a rocking chair—to foster an intimate and ludic encounter. The two chairs—named Birds for their plumage-inspired coloring—will only enter into a balancing motion when the sitters learn to acknowledge and share each other’s weight, reaching a delicate agreement.

Artist: Iván Argote

Placed on sculptural surfaces that visitors can intervene with, the Bird Chairs, whose colors are inspired by these animals, were created not only for people to sit together, but also to face one another directly.

This installation, designed for the museum’s terrace, invites us to inhabit the space differently, to pause, and to share the experience with others.

Iván Argote is a contemporary multimedia artist whose work explores the dynamics of public space and collective memory. Through sculpture, public installation, film, painting, and performance, Argote challenges dominant narratives through a combination of critique, humor, and tenderness that encourages reflection and constructive dialogue. By inviting audiences to rethink the relationships between power and place, Argote’s work points toward new futures grounded in care and mutual respect.
