We are a living testament to the transformation of the city
Exclusive interview by Christie's with our director María Mercedes González
- María Mercedes González, MAMM director"We are a museum that maintains an international perspective; however, there is no denying that we are rooted in this city. We are deeply connected to our surroundings and our communities. Medellín has always been part of the MAMM's DNA."
This interview with our director, conducted by Alastair Smart for Christie’s, offers a deep insight into the museum’s journey from our founding in 1978 to our current position as a symbol of resistance and urban renewal in the city.
During this conversation, it is highlighted how we have evolved, facing challenges such as the violence of drug trafficking in the 1980s and 1990s, and how, today, we have established ourselves as a reflection of the “Medellín miracle,” a process of urban revitalization known worldwide. Throughout this conversation, our director also speaks about a mission that is not limited to art exhibitions and the conservation of our collection, but extends to being a community meeting space, promoting inclusion and cultural education.
The interview also explores historical and recent exhibitions that address themes of identity and social relevance, underscoring our commitment to the local community and our role as an open forum for cultural dialogue.
