Description
‘El Poblado Verde’ will be a tour through the vegetation of the El Poblado neighborhood in Medellín, inspired by the doctoral thesis of artist Camila Echeverría, “Reflection on public space in the neoliberal city: artistic practices and urban activations in the El Poblado neighborhood of Medellín.” The focus of this tour is the vegetation of El Poblado as a reflection of touristification and gentrification.
Route
The tour will begin at La Presidenta ravine public park, a natural boundary and southeastern limit of the neighborhood, where we will discuss the uses, strategies, and characteristics of the vegetation in this area. Then we will walk along Carrera 39 towards Parque Lleras, one of the most controversial spots in the neighborhood today, where the trees have been the oldest inhabitants of the area, still standing despite the renovations, gentrification, and touristification of recent years. We will descend Calle 9, the well-known “Frito Street,” passing by Carrera 42, where several of the neighborhood’s oldest trees reside. We will identify their species and botanical characteristics. Finally, we will arrive at El Poblado Park, where we will conclude the tour with a detailed visit to the park, discussing its historical layers and its role as a witness to historical, political, and social moments in the city of Medellín. We will be accompanied by several emblematic trees that still hold the secrets of those who shared their struggles with them. The closing, along with a cold beer, hopefully, will be a collective sharing of the reflections that this journey leaves us with.
The meeting point will be shared after registration is confirmed.
