25th anniversary of Amores perros

Considered one of the most important films of 21st-century cinema, Amores perros premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000, where it won the Grand Prize of the Critics’ Week, thus launching the international career of Alejandro González Iñárritu. A visceral and multi-narrative portrait of love, loss, and survival in Mexico City, the film earned a nomination for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and remains a benchmark of contemporary cinema.

At Cine MAMM, we are re-releasing this canonical work of Latin American cinema, which is a faithful reflection of the rawness of the dramas of our region and the authenticity and originality with which its director and screenwriter, Guillermo Arriaga, wove this intricate web of stories to show us that even in the most unfortunate moments of our lives, chance continues to unite us as humanity.

A legacy whose anniversary celebration began this 2025 with its return to the Cannes Film Festival, with the first screening of the new restored version of Amores Perros as part of the “Cannes Classics” selection, with the presence of the director and Gael García Bernal.

Amores perros
Alejandro González Iñárritu / 2000 / Mexico / 154 min.

In Mexico City, a traffic accident connects three stories: Octavio, a teenager, decides to elope with Susana, his sister-in-law. His dog Cofi becomes the instrument to get the money and escape. At the same time, Daniel leaves his family to move in with Valeria, a model. The day they celebrate their new life together, fate causes Valeria to have an accident. El Chivo arrives at the scene, a former guerrilla fighter who, after several years in prison, is now a hitman.
