Cinemancia Festival at MAMM

Metropolitan Film Festival in the Aburrá Valley

Cinemancia is a celebration of cinema. It is a festival committed to making the space —physical, sentimental, spiritual, fantastic— a place where movies truly matter.

In 2025, the festival will take place from September 11 to 20 in the ten municipalities of the Aburrá Valley: Envigado, Bello, Sabaneta, Medellín, Caldas, La Estrella, Itagüí, Copacabana, Girardota and Barbosa, with free-admission screenings and academic activities.

Portales
Elena Duque / 2025 / Spain / 16 min.
The film follows the course of the Guadalete River in Cádiz, Spain, from the mountains to the sea: a catalog of landscapes that hide other landscapes, a collection of interdimensional portals (and postcards) that fuses live action and animation, creating impossible fauna and flora, inventing a new history and geography for a humble waterway.

Las muchas muertes de Antonio Perreiras
Lucas Parente / 2025 / Brazil / 65 min.
A film freely inspired by the life and work of painter Antonio Parreiras (1860-1937), famous for his paintings of dense forests, historical canvases, and female nudes. His work persistently immerses itself in the untamed light of the tropics. No one before him had gone so far down that path. His observation of light and its effects on visual perception reveals a striking modernity, radically anti-European: far from diffused illumination and traditional masses of shadow, he captures crisp, almost violent zones of light, a practice that only much later was matched by Cinema Novo photography. This is a journey through those dense, devouring forests.

Andariega
Raúl Soto Rodríguez / 2025 / Colombia / 96 min.
Chena is a 26-year-old single mother; each year she joins the diaspora of wandering farmworkers who walk hundreds of kilometers from their homes to work as day laborers or coffee pickers in Colombia. Despite the grueling work, she embraces this nomadic lifestyle. Her survival depends on her ability to perform physically demanding tasks, her tenacity to confront a man’s world, and the strength of her own body, which is beginning to show signs of weakening from the daily effort. After eight years working in the fields, she has not been able to save money or achieve economic independence. She hopes to return home at the end of the year, just in time to
celebrate her son’s birthday.

Guests: Raúl Soto (director), Yira Plaza O’Byrne (filmmaker, producer, and teacher), and Isabel Otálvaro (filmmaker and editor)

Sanrizuka: El pueblo de Heta
Shinsuke Ogawa / 1970 / Japan / 146 min.
When the Japanese government’s intention to build an airport in Narita became known, farmers and students launched a strong campaign of mobilizations. The violent clashes in the fields of Sanrizuka claimed numerous victims and, ultimately, the suicide of a young activist, which left deep scars on those still living in the fields. Farmers were constantly arrested and prevented from working during harvest season. In this film, Ogawa documents how the remaining members of the community seek solace and perseverance together.
