Colombian Zoography. Tour of the Débora Arango exhibition

As part of the celebration of the Museum’s 45th anniversary, we will offer a wide range of workshops and tours through our exhibitions, in which you can participate freely with prior registration.

In this tour, we will reflect on the frank and critical attitude of Débora Arango in documenting the reality of Colombia in the 1950s, a nation not far removed from today’s, constantly stalked by the bestiary of stains and brushstrokes that the artist captured in our collective memory. Débora Arango’s mastery in putting sensitive issues on canvas that turned out to be timeless was sustained by her natural ability as a zoographer; someone with the ability to see beyond the appearance of animals and the skills to represent them archetypically.

About the exhibition
This exhibition brings together 16 works that reflect historically significant moments and events for Colombia, about which Débora Arango expressed herself without reservation, with sharpness and clarity. Débora Arango’s marked interest in political themes arose from the description of the events that occurred during the Bogotazo, following the assassination of liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, with whom Arango had a close relationship, and which are captured in Masacre del 9 de abril. This led the artist to closely follow subsequent events after the tragic incident through the radio and to process them in this work. Thus, the theme of Violence was not foreign to the artist; it was part of her reality and context, and directly touched her social circle. These pieces recover moments still present in the country’s collective memory.
