María Cano
Camila Loboguerrero / 1990 / Colombia / 106 min.
Synopsis: Colombia in the 1920s. The country receives compensation for the separation of Panama and opens itself to foreign credit to undertake major development projects. The workforce grows, although their conditions do not improve, as they remain subject to those established since the colonial era. The climate is more than ripe for labor struggles and the emergence of fierce leaders: María Cano was one of the most prominent. Her work on behalf of workers also extended to women’s rights; she confronted the powerful, traveled the country, and ventured into literature. She and her companions make this history.
After the screening, Karen Lamassonne, artist and art director of the film, converses with Daniela Abad, filmmaker.
