Memories in expansion: 10 years of the new MAMM

Ten years after the opening of the expansion building of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, we invite its architects to a public conversation to remember, reflect, and walk through in words this key work for the cultural transformation of the city.
The panel discussion will address the design and construction processes, as well as the way the building has been inhabited and given new meaning over time. More than a nostalgic look, this will be an opportunity to recognize its creators and to think of architecture as a living space: made of concrete, yes, but also of memory, uses, and collective imagination.
The MAMM expansion, inaugurated in 2015, was the result of an international call that sought to broaden the Museum’s cultural offerings with new spaces for exhibition, experimentation, and gathering. The project, developed by 51-1 Arquitectos (Peru) and Ctrl G Arquitectos (Medellín), was inspired by the architecture of the city’s hillsides and transformed MAMM into an urban landmark, significantly increasing its capacity for hosting, programming, and impact.
This gathering will feature the participation of Catalina Patiño and Viviana Peña (Ctrl G); Manuel de Rivero, César Becerra, and Fernando Puente Arnao (51-1 Arquitectos); and Juan David Mejía, those responsible for the project, who will discuss how this work has engaged in dialogue with Medellín over the course of a decade.
