Milisuthando. Screening with conversation

Milisuthando
Milisuthando Bongela / 2023 / South Africa, Colombia / 128 min

A naked woman standing before a giant statue of Nelson Mandela awakens the need to delve into her own identity. Milisuthando, the director of a personal and intimate film, digs into the “forgotten” past of a family built in Transkei. Conceived as an experiment during Apartheid, Transkei is, in the grandmother’s memory, a kind of lost paradise. There, Black people lived “free,” self-governed in an enclave seemingly removed from the genocidal assault that white people carried out in South Africa. That is where Milisuthando spent her childhood, until, in the 1990s, the end of Apartheid pushed her to discover that other forms, and other skins, inhabited what from that moment on would become her world. The dialogue with her family, Black, and with her friends, white, becomes for Mili a dialogue with herself and an inquiry into the fears and guilts carried for being or not having been, for having taken part or having silenced stories, for the weight of family decisions that shaped the course of who we are now, making the film a kind of personal catharsis process in which the director sheds the weight of the garments she voluntarily or involuntarily carries. Like the naked woman in front of the statue, Milisuthando exposes her greatest intimacy to the public gaze, the nakedness of her fears and her questions. The need to understand herself. To open chapters in order to close chapters. To let the wounds bleed so they can finally heal.

Following this screening, a conversation will take place with Viviana Gómez from Viso Producciones.
