Synopsis: One night, near his home in Indiana, Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) observes mysterious flying objects in the sky. From that moment on, he becomes so obsessed with understanding what he has seen that he distances himself from his wife (Teri Garr).
He finds support in Jillian Guiler (Melinda Dillon), a woman who has also witnessed the same events. Together they try to find an answer to the mystery that has altered their lives. At the same time, a large group of international scientists, under the direction of Claude Lacombe (François Truffaut), begins investigating UFO sightings and other strange phenomena.
