Panel discussion: Art and critical citizenships in Latin America

With the objective of deepening the transformation and understanding of urban art in Latin America, SURA launched the call “Art in the Urban: Our Relationship with Public Space in Latin America.”

The selected project, titled Latin America: Art and Critical Citizenships, is led by a team of 11 Latin American researchers who throughout 2024 have developed a conceptual exercise. The results of this research will be shared between November 12 and 15 in various spaces in Medellín, including the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (MAMM), with free admission.

About the research

This collective research explores the relationship between art and critical citizenships from the 1960s to the present, highlighting the expression of a citizen who questions, proposes, and acts, often from activism. Its goal is to understand how art and citizenship interact in urban space to create transformative experiences. This approach reveals both the diversity and the common ground of Latin American contexts, providing a perspective on how citizen actions contribute to shaping regional history and identity.

Gathering at the MAMM Theater

The event will feature a discussion panel where participants will explore how art in Latin America has shaped citizen experiences and subjectivities, addressing topics such as critical pedagogies, environmental activism, and social memory. Participants will include Michelle Farias Sommer (Brazil), Mercedes Reategui (Peru), Mijail Mitrovic (Peru), Monica Amieva (Mexico), Thais Magalhaes (Brazil), Adriana Palma (Brazil), Esperanza de Leon (Guatemala), Ana Longoni (Argentina), and Gerardo Mosquera (Cuba). Moderation will be led by Jorge Lopera (Colombia) and Pablo Santamaria (Colombia).
