Barry Lyndon
Stanley Kubrick / 1975 / United Kingdom / 184 min.
Based on the novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon by English author William Thackeray, this film tells the story of an ambitious young Irishman whose wandering and adventure-filled life leads him to win a place among the English nobility of the 18th century through a strategic union. The film is a visually stunning portrait of power, social class, and vanity.
A cinematic legacy that shone with its own light (literally)
When Kubrick decided to bring this story to the screen, he set out to create an atmosphere faithful to the 18th century. For this, costumes and historical locations were not enough: the light had to be the same that illuminated life back then. The solution? Filming interior scenes solely with candlelight, something that until that point was technically impossible.
The filmmaker achieved this feat by using the Zeiss Planar 50mm F0.7, a lens developed by NASA to photograph the dark side of the moon during the Apollo missions. This choice allowed capturing the Baroque atmosphere with unprecedented fidelity, emulating the aesthetics of painters like Vermeer and pushing to the extreme the pursuit of visual perfection that characterized Kubrick.
A must-see on the big screen
Watching Barry Lyndon on the big screen is witnessing a cinematic spectacle that transcends time. Every frame is designed like a painting; every camera movement, every silence, and every light serves a unique visual and emotional experience.
Celebrate with us the legacy of Stanley Kubrick and relive this gem of the seventh art in the cinema.
