Special screenings: 20th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice

As part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, we present special screenings of this acclaimed film adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic. Directed by Joe Wright, the film has established itself as an iconic work for its refined aesthetics, its remarkable art direction, and the sensitivity with which it reinterprets one of the most beloved novels in world literature.

Pride and Prejudice

Joe Wright / 2005 / United Kingdom / 126 min.

Intense, complex, passionate, and timeless. Such has been the relationship between cinema and literature since the very beginnings of the former at the end of the 19th century. The canonical works of world literature served as a valuable resource for the first creators of moving images, translating the words of history’s most iconic writers to the big screen and bringing to life characters, conflicts, settings, and atmospheres that existed only in the imagination of thousands of readers.

This same passion and complexity is what Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy carry in Jane Austen’s immortal novel. In Pride and Prejudice, the strict social protocols of late 18th-century England meant that in the remote English countryside, the pursuit of financial security, stability, and social prestige was a daily challenge for families, seeking the perfect husband for their daughters to secure a promising future. All of this without even considering the crucial element of love. Elizabeth and Darcy, with their respective social positions, defied this order and, under Austen’s sharp and precise pen, created one of the most well-known love stories of all time.

A story that, in 2005, fellow Englishman Joe Wright decided to adapt for cinema with artfully crafted sequences, where every camera movement, every shot, and every line of dialogue is perfectly placed to convey with undeniable beauty the comings and goings of gentlemen and ladies in search of their perfect match. The faithful and precise recreation of this era earned the film Oscar nominations for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, and Keira Knightley’s moving performance as Elizabeth Bennet earned her first nomination for Best Leading Actress.

20 years later, we celebrate the aesthetic and cinematic achievement that this film represents and invite you to be moved once again by a love story that goes from impossibility to reality with all the ups and downs, prejudices, and prides of youth in love.
