Sun & Sea: an opera-performance about climate change
“Sun & Sea” is an installation and performance that combines musical theater and visual arts to reflect on one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change and its consequences on everyday life.
The work presents an artificial beach illuminated by a fictitious sun, where some twenty people — singers and performers in swimsuits — enjoy an apparent summer day. From elevated platforms, the audience observes how the leisure scene slowly transforms into a disturbing metaphor: each performer, through songs and monologues, reveals concerns ranging from the trivial to the apocalyptic, building a chorus that denounces the ecological crisis and global indifference.
Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale 2019, this contemporary opera uses the beach as a symbol of the pleasures of consumerism and of time running out in the face of the climate emergency.
