Exposición Ficción etnográfica Laura Huertas
Program C

Laura Huertas Millán. Ethnographic Fiction

The work of Laura Huertas Millán explores the links between aesthetics and politics through the cinematic medium and narrative, both expanded through film productions, collages, writings, and performances. In 2009, influenced by the text Manifesto Antropófago (1928) by Brazilian poet Oswald de Andrade and her research on human zoos in the early 20th-century European colonial context, she began a series of works around the notion of exoticism that led to an interest in deconstructing the iconographic language of ethnography. In 2012, Huertas Millán began a new series composed of “ethnographic fictions” that refer to a hybrid practice between research and staging. Ficción etnográfica is part of this series of works

Calendar From 20 de April 2016 al 26 de June del 2016

This unreleased film work was created in the community of Santo Tomás Jalieza in Oaxaca (Mexico), where Huertas Millán, together with the Navarro family of weavers, creates a filmic dialogue between the artist, the artisans, and the backstrap loom technique used in the region since pre-Hispanic times. La libertad articulates images and dialogue where the textile is understood as archive, as a means of sustenance, and of emancipation. The gallery exhibition will extend to the Theater, where a program of videos, short films, and feature films related to ethnography and the politics of representation will be presented throughout the show.

Theater Program
