Lorena Espitia. Stop following me, morning star

In Stop Following Me, Morning Star, Lorena Espitia (Bogotá, 1983) takes as her starting point the experiments that the Czech anatomist Johannes Evangelista Purkinje carried out in the 19th century and, through which, he was able to establish the existence of “Purkinje images”, that is, the reflections of objects that are part of the internal structure of the eye and that we perceive with our eyes closed.

Calendar From 05 de April 2017 al 03 de July del 2017

Based on a record of experiments the artist conducted on her own eyes, following Purkinje’s descriptions, Espitia produced a series of paintings and sculptures that, in a way, capture, interpret, and edit images that are fleeting by nature. These images form part of our visual information bank and function as mediators between perception and interpretation, like a threshold that visually connects the interior and exterior of our bodies.

Other works address another recent concern of Espitia’s: the perception of movement and how it can be represented through different media.
