MAMM opens six exhibitions and launches an agenda of reflection on art, territory, and indigenous resistance

  • On Wednesday, October 2, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., the MAMM will open six new exhibitions to the public with free admission and voluntary contribution.
  • El espacio en medio, the first collaboration between an Australian museum and a Colombian one, brings together 24 artists from 18 indigenous peoples from around the world.
  • Colombian artists such as Aycoobo, Tahuanty Jacanamijoy, and the Consejo Ancestral Willka Yaku participate, whose works reflect the struggles and memories of their communities.
  • Performances and conversations will be held with international artists such as Bhenji Ra, Elvira Espejo Ayca, and Nicholas Galanin, from October 2 to 4.
  • These exhibitions, never before seen in Colombia, address urgent topics such as land management, climate change, and the recognition of ancestral rights.

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (MAMM) presents an extensive cultural program that opens on Wednesday, October 2, with six exhibitions open to the public from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Among them is El espacio en medio, a collaboration with the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, which brings together artists from 18 indigenous peoples from around the world in a conversation about sustainability, territory, and cultural resistance.

In addition to this exhibition, the MAMM will offer encounters, performances, and dialogues between artists and curators from different territories, promoting reflection on land management and intercultural connections, with programming extending through Friday, October 4.

About the exhibitions:

  • El espacio en medio connects indigenous artists from around the world, addressing topics such as land management, climate change, and the recognition of ancestral rights.
  • Ángela María Restrepo. Nada se puede duplicar realmente is a reflection on the fragility of human life and finitude, composed entirely of new work by this master printmaker from Medellín.
  • Khoka Project explores the cultural and social relationship with the coca plant from an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • No-objetualismos. Hacia un pensamiento visual independiente examines the development of contemporary art in Latin America, based on the non-objectual concept.
  • Huellas de aire, a sound installation by Ximena Alarcón, connects air quality in Medellín with the emotional imprints of its inhabitants.
  • Correspondences is a collaborative project between Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith that explores soundscapes and the impact of climate change.

11:00 a.m. Palabreo led by the Consejo Ancestral Willka Yaku, from the Misak People.

6:00 p.m. Conversation El espacio en medio / The Space Between with Brook Garru Andrew and Paschal Berry, from the Powerhouse, and Emiliano Valdés and Ana Ruiz, from the MAMM.

7:00 p.m. Performance by Minor Gestures, a collective created by artists Bhenji Ra and Brian Fata, along with Ballroom Medellín.
