MAMM presents two exhibitions that explore the Amazons

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín invites you to the opening of the exhibitions Bubuia and Lleébu, a double experience that invites reflection on rivers, indigenous languages, life, and the defense of territory in the Amazon.

  • The date is this Wednesday, July 16, from 5:00 p.m., with free admission for all visitors.
  • This is an exhibition cycle that brings together works by artists from indigenous peoples, Black communities, and riverside communities from Brazil, Peru, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, and Colombia.
  • Two exhibitions that connect art, defense of territory, and languages from the heart of the Amazon.
  • Programming will continue on Thursday, July 17 with a commented listening session by artist León David Cobo around the exhibition Lleébu, and a guided tour of Bubuia with Brazilian curators Keyna Eleison and Vânia Leal.

An immersion into the vital flows of art, memory, and territory

The MAMM presents two new temporary exhibitions that open paths for thinking about art from the global south, with critical approaches to the protection of ancestral knowledge, the defense of territory, and the creative power of Amazonian communities.

Bubuia. Aguas como fuente de imaginaciones y deseos emerges within the framework of the 1st Bienal das Amazônias, in Belém, Brazil, and brings together works by artists from indigenous peoples, Black communities, and riverside communities from Brazil, Peru, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, and Colombia. Under the curatorship of Keyna Eleison and Vânia Leal, this exhibition proposes a drift through the waters as a space of spirituality, desire, affection, and conflict.

Lleébu. Amazonía colombiana: sonidos y lenguas indígenas en riesgo is an artistic and research project by sound artist León David Cobo, which starts from an essential question: What is lost when a language disappears? The answer transcends the linguistic: unique ways of inhabiting the world vanish, along with collective memories, ancestral knowledge about the territory, and ways of relating to nature. Lleébu—which means “to listen” in the Bora language—embodies an ancestral practice of attention to the environment, where listening becomes an act of resonance and care.

Both exhibitions are part of the MAMM’s commitment to making visible artistic practices that engage with territory, cultural diversity, and environmental justice.
