Daniel Lara Ballesteros. Yarumo. Dialogues and resonances

Listening with Touch and Other Senses

Daniel Lara Ballesteros (Monterrey, Mexico, 1976) examines the physical and metaphysical characteristics of sound, whose therapeutic qualities play an important role in the production of his installations, workshops, and compositions. For these, the artist collects frequency data, such as that of the yarumo tree, which he then transforms using both analog and electronic means.

Calendar From 27 de June 2018 al 09 de September del 2018

This exhibition is preceded by a dialogue the artist establishes with a group of yarumo trees from the Antioquia region through radiesthesia (a special sensitivity to detect certain radiations) and other ancient knowledge.

Through these methods, the artist interprets the vibrations emanating from the trees in order to transfer and propagate these frequencies through a wooden platform so that the public, seated or lying down, can intimately perceive the vibration and sound. This work has a therapeutic purpose for the artist, as the yarumo tree possesses properties such as being an anti-asthmatic, effective in stimulating nerve function, enhancing sensory capacity, and regulating heart function. According to the indigenous customs of certain areas of Colombia, its leaves, crushed and cooked, are one of the ingredients in the preparation of mambe, a beverage whose preparation is intended, among other things, to stimulate the gift of speech.

Yarumo Dialogues and resonances seeks to generate, from the communication that the artist establishes with the yarumo trees and through sound vibrations, sensations that allow one to perceive or feel, by touch and hearing, the peace, beauty and harmonic energy that these trees transmit when one is in their vicinity.
