Relive the experience
The photographs in this exhibition, housed in the Photographic Archive of the Public Library of Medellín for Latin America, represent one of the photographer’s most significant periods. Taken in 1979, they are part of the Full-Length Portraits series, created over several weeks in Guayaquil. There, inside a warehouse, Ruiz set up a very simple studio consisting of a neutral-colored paper backdrop and a Hasselblad 500 ELM camera. The light he used was natural; that which came in through the door. And nothing more. In this sort of temporary studio, he invited people who frequented the area and completed a series of 33 photographs.
The Full-Length Portraits series can be summarized as one subject, one camera, and good light. It was shot on 120mm Kodak film and originally printed on paper in 40 x 40 centimeter prints.
