No(s) lleva la corriente: art, dance, music, and theater come together in El Poder de la cultura

Culture is like a river that is always in motion, in action, in continuous transformation and progress. It should never stop, although that is something that could happen. Why? Why would culture suddenly stop flowing?

“No(s) lleva la corriente” is a series of open-door gatherings organized by Corporacion Otraparte, the Ballet Metropolitano de Medellin, the Teatro Metropolitano, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin, and the Orquesta Filarmonica de Medellin, with the support of Comfama, to be held on October 10, 17, and 25 to listen to the territory and, through art, build and create city.

The initiative also embraces the recognition of public space as a plural territory of citizen appropriation, and connects with the Museo de Antioquia and the Plaza de Botero as spaces of free encounter.

What would happen if there were no spaces guaranteeing the cultural rights of the city? Or worse yet, what would happen if they existed but we could not access them? These are the questions that cultural entities ask themselves to open spaces for reflection and listening, to help explore how the south of the city relates to its surroundings. And especially to recognize that we are talking about a city that affects all its citizens, with issues that go beyond socioeconomic location, because in the end we are not only talking about access to culture, we are talking about the right to freely inhabit our city. That is why these actions, which geographically traverse the south of the city, will converge in the Plaza de Botero in a festival that dignifies public space and at the same time invites us to question ourselves as citizens beyond our own square meter.

The Power of Culture with open doors for everyone

The programming will initially take place in three locations in the south of the city: the surroundings of Otraparte, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin and Ciudad del Rio, and the Teatro Metropolitano and Parques del Rio; in these spaces, three small festivals will be held biweekly with cultural activities that integrate the diverse knowledge and sensibilities of the four entities.

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin will present kintsugi workshops in which, through the analogy of repairing ceramics, conversations about mental health will be opened, accompanied by the psycho-emotional care awareness activities of Corporacion Otraparte. For their part, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Medellin and the Ballet Metropolitano de Medellin come together in a staged performance inspired by Ethel Gilmour’s Guayacan Amarillo; using the guayacan tree as an allegory in which emptiness and neglect, perhaps at their peak, can bloom and fill the city with color. The Teatro Metropolitano will use unconventional spaces for interventions with two dance companies from the city: Otredanza and Danza Concierto, with the purpose of motivating reflection, dialogue, and inclusion through art expressions created by LGBTIQ+ artists.
